What Works for Me

When it comes to nutrition and exercise I have two advantages most folks don't.

One, I live in the Upper Haight district in San Francisco. If walking is your chosen means of regular exercise you can't beat the beauty of the Old Victorian laden Haight-Ashbury. And all those hills!

I like walking at night, when the fog rolls in, going up the hills or out by Golden Gate Park. I can do a 3 mile hike in under an hour in one of the most physically beautiful neighborhoods in the world.

Second, I am extremely food sensitive. Certain foods do horrible things to my wrists, hands, and knuckles. It's never been accurately diagnosed, as far as I'm concerned. Doctors want to put it down as repetitive stress, but after a decade of weird hand issues it's clear to me that my condition improves tremendously when I avoid the following: red meat, fried food, caffeine, processed sugar, too much diary fat.

No, I like to start my day with a piece of fruit (usually a banana) and CayennePepperWaterLemonMapleSyrup. As noted on another page, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper contains 15% of your recommended Daily Value (DV) of Vitamin A, and around 2%DV each of Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, manganese, and dietary fiber.

Two fluid ounces of fresh squeezed lemon juice contains 47%DV of Vitamin C.

When you throw in one tablespoon of maple syrup you're adding 33%DV of manganese and almost 6%DV of zinc.

Add one banana to this mini-breakfast and you're getting another 34%DV of Vitamin B6, 18%DV of Vitamin C, 13%DV of potassium, 11%DV of dietary fiber, and 9%DV of manganese.

So a 12oz glass of the Beyoncé Beverage & a Banana contains approximately:

67%DV of Vitamin C
44%DV of manganese
36%DV of Vitamin B6
15%DV of Vitamin A
13%DV of potassium
13%DV of dietary fiber
6%DV of zinc
2%DV of Vitamin K

In the fall of 2008 I started drinking Beyoncé's Beverage 4-5 times a week. I also was given a pedometer by the Divine Love of my life, who urged me to put in 10,000 steps a day. That's 5 miles. I was forced to cut back on fried food, sweets and diary fat for other health conditions.

After one year I lost 30 pounds! I'm in better shape now than 20 years ago. Easily.

Regular exercise, smarter diet choices, and the steady intake of cayenne pepper have helped me avoid the belly-fat problem folks my age face as our metabolism slows.

CayennePepperWaterLemonMapleSyrup puts fire in my heart and gets me hopping in the morning!
